Helping People Volunteer

Start Volunteering Today!

The Volunteer Center can assist you in finding the best volunteer opportunities that meet your needs: your interests, schedule, location, and any other preferences. We are a "matchmaker" between potential volunteers and organizations. We make it easy for groups, families, and individuals to get involved in the community, by calling one place to find a variety of volunteer experiences, whether it is for a few hours on a Saturday or every Wednesday afternoon. The Volunteer Center has over 260 registered agencies with thousands of volunteer opportunites at our fingertips.

About 1,290,000 people (30.1% of the population of Maryland) volunteered a median of 60 hours each in Maryland in 2005 acorrding to Volunteering in America: State Trends and Rankings 2002-2005, published by the Corporation for National & Community Service.

The Corporation has also produced a national report that for the first time tracks volunteering over a 30-year period. “Volunteer Growth in America: A Review of Trends Since 1974” illustrates how volunteering has rebounded to a 30-year high today – rising by more than 32 percent over the past 16 years – after declining between 1974 and 1989. The report found that older teenagers (ages 16-19) have more than doubled their time spent volunteering since 1989; that far from being a “Me Generation,” that Baby Boomers are volunteering at sharply higher rates than did the previous generation at mid-life; and that the volunteer rate for Americans ages 65 years and over has increased 64 percent since 1974; and the proportion of Americans volunteering with an educational or youth service organization has seen a 63 percent increase just since just 1989.

Here in Anne Arundel County, the VCAAC is the sole countywide resource to connect potential volunteers with opportunities to meet local community needs. As of Dec. 2005, VCAAC has referred more than 8,100 volunteers to over 260 nonprofit, governmental, and faith-based community agencies.

During 2005, volunteers referred by the VCAAC generated 7,600 volunteer hours per month in Anne Arundel County. These volunteer hours create almost $2,000,000 of value added to Anne Arundel County in volunteer time per year.

However, a recently released study shows that 70% of Maryland nonprofit organizations still report a need for volunteers to fulfill their missions.
